Welcome to My Practice
Thank you for taking the positive step of seeking counseling. This document outlines important aspects of the therapeutic process and our working agreement. Therapy is both a deeply personal and contractual relationship. It is important for us to establish a clear understanding of how our work together will proceed and what we can expect from one another. Once you’ve reviewed this document and had any questions answered, you will be asked to sign the “Confidential Client Intake Information” form to confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to these policies and consent to begin counseling or psychotherapy.
The Therapeutic Process
Counseling is a journey that requires a commitment from both of us. While therapy can bring tremendous growth, self-understanding, and improvements in relationships, it may also lead to moments of discomfort. Discussing difficult life experiences, addressing relational challenges, or reflecting on past events may evoke strong emotions, such as sadness, guilt, anger, or anxiety. These emotions are natural and part of the growth process. Sharing these feelings with me will allow us to work through them together in a safe and constructive way. Progress depends on your willingness to engage in the therapeutic process both during and outside of sessions. Assignments such as journaling or practicing stress-reduction techniques are often essential for achieving meaningful results.
Treatment Planning and Participation
In the initial sessions, we will assess your concerns and develop a treatment plan tailored to your goals. This collaborative approach ensures clarity in what we aim to achieve together. Depending on your needs, referrals to other professionals or programs may be recommended. Regular progress evaluations help ensure that therapy remains effective and relevant. Active participation is key, as therapy involves a significant investment of time, energy, and resources.
Ending Therapy
Ending therapy is an important part of the process. Whether it comes at the natural conclusion of our work or by mutual agreement, a thoughtful termination process ensures closure. If I believe therapy is no longer effective, or if sessions are missed without prior arrangements for three consecutive weeks, I may suggest ending our professional relationship. Should this occur, I will assist in identifying other therapeutic options, if needed.
Confidentiality
Your privacy is a cornerstone of our therapeutic relationship. All discussions in therapy are confidential unless required by law or dictated by safety concerns. Confidentiality may be breached in situations such as self-harm, threats to others, or suspected abuse or neglect. Additionally, legal obligations, such as a court order or an insurance claim, may require limited disclosure. If such situations arise, I will discuss them with you whenever possible and only disclose what is absolutely necessary. Occasionally, I may consult with other professionals for guidance while ensuring your anonymity.
Appointments and Communication
Sessions are 55 minutes and scheduled based on your needs. While I am available by phone, I may not be immediately accessible. Urgent non-life-threatening messages will be addressed as soon as possible, but emergencies should always be directed to 911 or a local hospital. For electronic communication, such as scheduling through text or email, please note that these are not secure channels. Therapeutic content or emergency matters should not be discussed electronically.
Social Media and Website Policy
To maintain professional boundaries and protect your confidentiality, I do not accept social media requests from current or former clients. Communication through public platforms, such as my website, should also be avoided. Direct contact by phone or email is preferred for all inquiries or concerns.
Fees, Insurance, and Cancellations
Sessions are $150. Legal services, such as preparing reports or appearing in court, are billed at $125 per hour. If you cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice, or miss an appointment without prior communication, the full session fee will be charged unless circumstances are beyond your control. Currently, I am not on insurance panels; however, I can provide receipts for you to file claims independently. Clients are encouraged to contact their insurance providers to understand their benefits before beginning therapy.
Record Keeping
Your clinical records are maintained in compliance with HIPAA standards. These records include your therapy goals, progress, and treatment history. They will not be released without your written consent, except in circumstances outlined by confidentiality laws. Please review the HIPAA Notice of Privacy Practices for further details.
Feedback
Your comfort and satisfaction with therapy are important. If you have any concerns or feedback, please do not hesitate to bring them to my attention. Open communication is vital to resolving issues and ensuring a positive therapeutic experience.
